Strenght of a Woman
"So amazing how this world was made I wonder if God is a woman...." I heard this song before but in all honesty I've never given it much thought not until today.
The story of creation defines a woman n indeed, contrasts her to a significant degree to a man. While a man is created out of clay, a woman is made from a bone. This sets the pace with which women approach life with. They are strong and can outlive anything, good or bad. While men, just like clay are breakable, or can be shaped to form, a lady can be firm and has so much strength to face even the worst.
I know we, men are mean. I have seen men who cheat that they love their women, and even those who love to cheat on their women. But these kinds could be few, or could even define what a man is. Is there a man who is gentle enough to treat his lady like a princess? Maybe, just maybe! Women are not ‘things’. They are a creation and therefore, at best deserve to be treated as ‘persons’. Women are not doormats for any of us men to wipe our emotions on. In the book ‘The River and the Source’, Margaret Ogolla writes about the motif of the journey that women have made as they tread from the journey of insignificance to the place of autonomy in the society. Ogolla mourns the hegemony in the society where men are deemed as ‘Mr. Everything’. As the River of consciencetisation flows the book, women become protagonists and indeed, start to find their niche in the male dominated and oriented society.
I do know we tend to take advantage of the seeming ‘weaknesses in a lady to pursue self interests. This is well highlighted by Adelaide Casely Hayford in the story ‘The Refugee’. In the story, three men go to a refugee camp only to be mesmerized by the beauty of a woman who is a refugee in the camp. The young men start plotting how to woo the lady, of course using her incapacitation as the drive. But they are shocked, when the lady asks them a few questions, before she can engage them on a date. ‘Will you be able to pronounce upon logistics? Will you be able to know more about communism? Will you be able to tell why Ali Mazrui is sometimes awful, why Alex la Guma is a towering giant in the African literary field or why……?’ Before she could even finish, the men had disappeared.
But ladies. Allow me to make a case here. At times men try. After all, they are your fellow human beings. We are not perfect. We can never be right all the time. There are those times we are so sincere. There are times we are so honest. There are times we mean what we say and even say what we mean. These are our high moments. And I accept that there are those times when we are a big let down. At times we make you feel as though we are ‘animals’. There are instances when we a just a big let down. These are out low moments. If we have been at such low moments, please ladies, charge it to our heads for it is not the perfect head. In our high moments where we have loved and cared, charge it to our hearts, for they have such a high capacity to accommodate and appreciate
And I now know that you do not underestimate the strength of a woman!!
