Please tell me what else the church is doing?
I love the church. How could I do otherwise when I have been brought in the fear of the Lord God? I see the church as the body pf Christ. But oh! How we have blemished and scarred that body through neglect and fear of being non conformist. That is what our church is today. And whether the church has found its voice after taking sides in the political goings on in the country does not save much face.
There was a time when the church was very powerful. That time of Bishop Muge, Henry Okullu, Mwana a Nzeki, Gitari and others. They were quite something these church leaders. They would suffer not just for Christ but also for Kenyans and what they believed was right. During those times, the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the dictatorial regime into a tolerable regime. Whenever one would attend a church service. Be it in Catholic or Anglican or any other church, one felt in the house of God. Christians were able to rally around their church leaders. They pressed on with the conviction that they were a ‘colony of heaven’ called to obey God rather than man who was tearing down the nation. Men including retired president Moi, William Ruto, Kalonzo Musyoka, George Saitoti and others who now want to tell us they are holier than thou.
During that time, the congregation was nourished to the maximum, not just by the doctrines of the most high, but also in commitment. They were too God intoxicated to be intimidated by the Kanu regime. We have a different church today. A weak church with ineffectual voice which has an uncertain sound. So often, the church is the defender of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the power structure is consoled by the church’s silent-and often even vocal sanctions of things as they are.
I am not a preacher but I believe the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the church of the 80’s and 90’s, it will lose its authenticity and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the 21st century. Every day young people are getting disappointed with the church and we are disgusted.
Other than calling for fresh elections and presiding over marriage ceremonies, pray tell me what else is the church doing.
