We all want to be the best
In the Gospel according to St Mathew, we read how at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus closes by saying, “Whoever hears these words of mine, and does them, shall be likened to a wise man who built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.”
My happiness is always in doing what pleases God. Moreover, I am blessed to know that my contentment, which breeds my happiness, is built on another rock, another foundation and that rock is you my friends. Each passing day, whatever you behold and believe in changes the way I reason. Every time I scar my knees and feel weak to soldier on, you give me the support necessary to keep going. With your friendship, I have been able to brave the fierce winds and heavy rains of anxiety, hopelessness and anger.
Though each one of us has a different ambition in this world, what we have is a common denominator that we all want to be the best in our lives. But in this quest, we face so many challenges. But that is what Martin Luther King Jr. calls the story of life. There is always that battle. When you want to be good, something tells you to be bad. When you want to love, something compels you to hate. When you want to be optimistic about life, you get this urge to be pessimistic about your own fortunes. It is always a battle; life is made sweet by these battles for in them, you get the courage to live the next day so that you can be what you were not the previous day.
Malcolm X inspires me every time I read what he had to say about facing the challenges in life. He says “Never let anybody tell you and me the odds are against us. I do not even want to hear that. Those who think the odds are against you forget it. The odds are against you only when you are scared. They only things that make odds against you is a scared mind. When you get all that flight off you, there is no such thing as odds against you. Because when somebody knows that when he starts playing with you he got to kill your conscience, that person is not going to play with you.
We all want to go through the path of freedom. And on that path, Harriet Tubman had one piece of advice:
"If you hear the dogs, keep going.
If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.
If they are shouting after you, keep going.
Don’t ever stop. Keep going.
If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.
Even in the darkest of moments, my friends have the audacity to keep going to keep going.
We are not big on quitting. We do not have a moment to spare, for we keep going!!!"
