Friends 2009 and beyond

I tag you in this note as my friend. and you are not just friend for friendship sake; but for the little but important part you played in making a better Murugami in the year 2009. I may not know each of you in person but in the way I know you, there is a part of me you influenced. This list has been prepared in no specific order. What is important is that you are a part of who I can call ‘My best friends-2009 and beyond”.

Each one of you is unique and provided me with a different aspect about life. I am happy I have a mosaic of what an ordinary person would ever wish for in friends. I may not group you into any category, nor can I classify you in any way. I never cared which tribe you belong to nor did I care so much about your leanings in politics. I appreciated you all, the profession in which you are in not counting much. All I cared for was a friend I could learn from. And I am so happy for the invaluable lessons. We are now inseparably woven together by a common destiny-to be the best.

I do know our fathers and mothers had a vision of their own about us. They had ideals. I have all reason to believe that they collectively did whatever was in their power to change their time and pass on to us a better future. That is the path we must always take.

My pastor always reminds me that I am body of work. And as you may know about a body of work, it is never finished. It is cumulative; it deepens and expands with each day that you give your best. Giving up at this point in time is not necessary. You are in the right track. Some may write you off. Some may tell you that what you are trying to achieve has never been attempted-at least not by your clan. Some will even go on to hate you because you are simply the best. The pundits on the other hand will want to slice and dice you based on your aspirations. But if they do that , always be kind enough to remind them of the words of Harriet Tubman

“If you hear the dogs, keep going.
If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.
If they’re shouting after you, keep going.
Don’t ever stop. Keep going.
If you want a taste of freedom, keep going”

So many people who have made it in life did not have a rosy beginning. just look to history. Thomas Paine was a failed corset maker, a failed teacher, and a failed tax collector before he made his mark on history with a little book called Common Sense that helped ignite a revolution. Julia Child did not publish her first cookbook until she was almost fifty, and Colonel Sanders did not open up his first Kentucky Fried Chicken until he was in his sixties. Winston Churchill was dismissed as little more than a has-been, who enjoyed scotch just a bit too much, before he took over as Prime Minister and saw Great Britain through its finest hour!!!

You hold the key to your destiny. You may either open it now or when you feel time is ripe.
I wish you happiness and contentment during this festive season. Let us pray for one another and may we usher in 2010 as the best of friends.
