Success and the ladder thereof?

So many times I have heard of the saying, " the ladder of success." I have thought about it and I refuse to ride that tidal wave. The more I think about it, there is no ladder of success. This is because the saying presupposes that success is one dimensional which couldn't be further from the truth. They are right and wrong. You see, it is true you are climbing up and it is one step at at time, sometimes we can skip a few steps but it is always step by step. The thing is it is not a ladder, but a pyramid. You see the pyramid's base is at it's widest and narrows as you go up. You see in life when we are just starting out we have so many people around us, friends, acquitances, colleagues, family but once we start climbing the pyramid, when we take the next step, the space becomes narrower, it is not as wide as it was at the base. That means we cannot accommodate people the same way as we did before and so what happens is, some fall off along the way, others can...

Tell me -

I want you to tell me about every person you’ve ever been in love with. Tell me why you loved them. Tell me why they loved you. Tell me about a day in your life you didn’t think you’d live through. Tell me what the word “home” means to you and tell me like you mean it. Tell me your mother’s name. Describe your bedroom when you were 6 years old. What makes you laugh? Have you ever been so happy you wanted to cry? Do you smoke cigarettes; have you ever experimented with drugs? What is the craziest thing you’ve done for love? What’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you? Tell me about your first time. Tell me what turns you on, what turns you off. Have you ever been unfaithful? Tell me about the guy who broke your heart. Do you sometimes miss him? I want to know the first time you felt the weight of hate and if that day still trembles beneath your bones. Does the smell of rain remind you of God?  Tell me about your first kiss on the lips. Do you kiss your friends on...

I know why caged birds sing - Dr. Maya Angelou

Today, I read, "I know why caged birds sing," an exceptional piece by Dr. Maya Angelou and thought of sharing it here: “Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. I say, It’s in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can’t touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them, They say they still can’t see. ...

Youth and Professionals in the political context

Kenya stands in a desperate need for leadership if we are ever going to turn our country around and pull it from the brink. Leadership is not about position but influence. We in Kenya make the mistake of looking at this or that person in expectation that they shall bring about change. But each of us is in a position to influence two or three people at the workplace and at home on a daily basis. If we utilized these opportunities wisely we would herald the change we crave much faster. Instead we all wait to become presidents before we can lead. In so doing we focus so much attention on the presidency while neglecting our own power to influence positive change that we ironically end up empowering the very office we complain is too powerful. Kenya is close to that point where young people will be able to tip the balance and bring about change. Young proffessionals have a vital role in providing the leadership necessary to focus all this youthful energy toward the desired outcomes and s...

I LOVE YOU LORD, GREATER THAN ANYTHING - LIONEL PETERSEN

Image
It was that time when my mind just decided to wander in search of answers, my heart was in turmoil and my spirit was screaming because it needed some tranquility. I just put on this song by Lionel Petrsen and all over a sudden there was a sudden hash... and everything slowed down tenfold...I could almost swear I could hear my heart beat...the serenity was just perfect. As the music played My mind collected, my heart was once again calm and my spirit nourished. I was at peace! It was that time that I felt my knees give way and before I knew it I was praying and giving God praise because of all that he has done in my life. I was reminded that I still needed him and it was because of his grace and mercy that I was still here today. For he does not start what he has not finished. Thus I know his purpose in my life still very much alive. I LOVE YOU LORD, GREATER THAN ANYTHING - LIONEL PETERSEN (Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you Lord. Allow...

Why Raila is having an Adele Moment

Image
WHY RAILA ODINGA AND ADELE ARE SINGING THE SAME SONGS Whoever said that sometimes we are tied together in a single garment of fate no matter where one is in the world was right. It could not have been more appropriate when you think of events in the life of music sensation and multiple Grammys award winner Adele. It gets to be a tale of two people with different backgrounds and experiences almost sharing the same song, perhaps with different tunes when you factor what Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been going through, especially with the Musalia Mudavadi uncertainty in ODM. Adele has been phenomenal. Her rise to the top of the music world in 2009, has seen her, according to music critics, topple the likes of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Diana Ross when it comes to a larynx that delivers that almost impossible note. She is currently riding high with her Album titled 21, which has been achieved a unique fete in being number one in over 20 d...

Martin Luther 1968 and Kenya April 2012

Forty years ago today evening, Martin Luther King Jr would preach his last sermon. Watching him on numerous documentaries as he delivered that sermon tells of a man who was on a reflective but somber mood. It is as though he had a premonition of what would befall him a few days later. The following day, he would be assassinated. On that night as he began his sermon, he asked his listeners to imagine God making him an offer he couldn't refuse: "If I were standing at the beginning of time, with the possibility of general and panoramic view of the whole human history up to now," he said, "and the Almighty said to me, 'Martin Luther King, which age would you like to live in?' - I would take my mental flight by Egypt or across the Red Sea, through the wilderness on toward the Promised Land. And in spite of its magnificence, I wouldn't stop there." He listed other times and places he considered during his panoramic flight through history:...
